The Bushati of Shkodra were the ruling family of the city and its surrounding areas for almost the entire Ottoman period. There are many different theories about the origins of the Bushati family. One of the descendants of this family underwent a high-resolution genetic test, and the result was E-V13>PH2180>FT232287. This is a characteristic Albanian lineage, especially for the regions north of the Drin River. The closest genetic match to the Bushatlliu family comes from a descendant of another feudal family of Shkodra, the Çausholli family. Both of these families are considered descendants of Koxha Jusuf Bey, the first ruler of Shkodra after the Ottoman conquest. This connection is now proven beyond doubt and shows that both families have been in Shkodra for at least 500 years.
