Bua is one of the most frequently encountered surnames in medieval documents related to Albanians. The Bua family was one of the early Albanian tribes that penetrated as far as the Peloponnese, where they established their own political and military units and were among the main leaders of the Albanian resistance against the Ottomans in Morea. Later, they also migrated to Italy, where the most famous descendant of the family was General Merkourios Bua. In Albania, the Bua family can still be found in Dhërmi. The writer Petro Marko recounts in his book 'Interview with Myself' that the Marko and Gjoni clans in Dhërmi are descended from the Bua tribe. The genetic result of the Bua family from Dhërmi is R1b-Z2103>Z2705>MF5057. The Marko family has the same result, indicating that the blood relation with the Bua family is certain. However, the same paternal lineage is also found in Vuno and Himarë, in families that do not recall any connection between them, a clear indicator of the ancient roots of this genealogical tree in the coastal region. Although there are some historical data that link the Bua family of Dhërmi to the medieval Bua clan of the Peloponnese and Italy, a genetic verification is needed for complete certainty. In this regard, it would be very valuable to learn the paternal lineage of the Arbëresh Bua family (we invite readers to help us get in contact if they know any of them).

The result: R1b-Z2103>Z2705>MF5057.

This lineage is also found among modern Greeks, indicating that the Bua family and other medieval Albanian settlers left a significant genetic impact in the region. Screenshot-2024-10-23-020454.png
